Small Vessel Regulations Update

UPDATE March 17, 2011: Minister Chuck Strahl has announced that registration for Canoe & Kayaks will not be required:

    From Transport Canada Website
"Registration for all human-powered vessels (such as canoes or kayaks), as well as for all small sailing vessels and all small vessels fitted with propulsion motors less than 10 hp (7.5 kW) will not be required. Registration will continue to be required for commercial river rafts, government vessels, or other vessels in future which require registration for safety reasons." "
Please note, this is an Interim policy. Transport Canada has suggested that registration for commercial sea kayaks may still be required in the "future". Check back for updates.

The SKGABC has written to Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Transport, Infrustructure and Communities, asking him to reasses how the new Small Vessel Regulations will be applied to commercial Sea Kayaks. While the SKGABC will always advocate for proffessional safety on an industry wide basis, the additional administrative and financial burden on our members will be substantial.

Transport Canada has announced it is reviewing how the act will be applied to Human-Powered Vessels.

Note: Transport Canada is currently reviewing the Vessel Registration and Tonnage Regulations for human-powered non-pleasure vessels and examining the feasibility of exemptions for certain groups, so that registration is sensible, efficient and fair for all Canadian boaters.
    From Transport Canada Website

The SKGABC encourages all members to remain in compliance of all local, provincial, and federal regulations. As such, please ensure your vessel will meet these new requirements.
